In an effort to promote southern Africa, RETOSA attends fairs and exhibitions and holds conferences for member states to discuss how best to promote the region and to discuss new ways o do so. The following is planned for the beginning of 2017:


FITUR is a global meeting point for tourism professionals and the leading trade fair for inbound and outbound Ibero American markets. Among the participation figures of note this year was the presence of 7 184 journalists from 60 countries, a turnout that demonstrates the importance of FITUR on the international circuit of tourism sector events. FITUR promotes the development of sustainable tourism in Africa, while encouraging exchanges on investment and business opportunities in the region. The fair is structured in two sessions that take place at the same time. A round table session will be held at the 2017 trade fair entitiled ‘Technology and the design of new tourism products and skills development, youth and women employment in tourism’. RETOSA will be represented at this important session as it will have a representative on the panel.

The other session is the ‘Business to Business’ meetings. This is a very important session as it will put African tourism project leaders and potential partners in direct contact with one another. This strategic platform will be a unique opportunity for both parties to build long-term and fruitful business collaborations.

The significance of digital and social media marketing in the southern Africa tourism sector has become so important that RETOSA has seen a need to hold a forum for its member states in February next year. The venue is still to be confirmed. RETOSA’s Digital and Social Media Marketing Forum is aimed at destination marketing professionals of all levels and disciplines. RETOSA hopes that the forum will assist marketers and communication officials to take up a more specialist role within the overall digital and social media marketing domain. The forum will also bring together top client-side digital marketing professionals and industry experts to discuss key topics and share insights.

The overarching aim of the conference is to alleviate the deficit in digital and social media marketing skills in the destination marketing sector throughout southern Africa. It is envisaged that at the end of this forum, delegates will understand the various channels and activities required to plan, implement and manage a comprehensive digital and social media marketing plan for destinations and businesses.


RETOSA will host another Youth in Tourism conference in February 2017. This conference is aimed at addressing the various challenges facing today’s youth which require a comprehensive, inter-generational, and cross-sectoral approach, with the participation of governments, youth, and all segments of society. RETOSA believes there is a growing need for it to address the various challenges facing the youth, in particular, the shortage of job opportunities especially in the tourism sector.

The conference will also provide a platform for the youth to converse amongst themselves and with various other stakeholders to explore possible solutions for creating an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable future through tourism. The conference aims to bring increased attention to the high unemployment rates amongst the youth and identify the role of governments, civil society, the private sector and young people in providing sustainable tourism solutions within the context of the current economic situation.
