Message from the executive director

2015 has been a very busy year for RETOSA and its member states and much has been achieved. This year saw the establishment of the Southern African Youth in Tourism Forum and Steering Committee, a historical event on the calendar of the regions’ tourism growth and development.

The steering committee which was formed at the 2015 Southern Africa Youth in Tourism conference, held in Mauritius, and comprised of representatives from the member states, is tasked with the responsibility of speeding up the process of ensuring the inclusion of young people in national tourism development programmes. Their commitment and tireless efforts to work towards the region’s tourism growth through youth parIcipaIon is truly commendable.

Planning has already begun on the 2016 Southern Africa Youth in Tourism Conference which will be hosted by Mozambique in April.

RETOSA member states will be kicking off the new year by attending the sixth Tourism Investment and Business Forum for Africa (INVESTOUR) which will be held on 29 January in Madrid, Spain, in collaboration with the UNWTO and Casa África. INVESTOUR recognises the dynamic effect tourism has on the economies of the countries of Africa as well as its role in promoting sustainable development in the region (Investour).

Meetings Africa showcases Africa’s diverse offering of services and products where African associaIons and African industry professionals can partner to help transform the continent. The next MeeIngs Africa takes place from 22 February 2016 at the Sandton Convention Centre. RETOSA member states will be attending this conference and we will have more on this in our next edition of the newsletter.

The meeting for SADC ministers responsible for tourism has been set for early 2016. At the last meeting, held on the margins of the Tourism Indaba, RETOSA was directed to develop a proposal for the transformation of the organisaion. This proposal is being finalised and we are optimistic that it will be approved.

Should you intend travelling this festive season, we suggest you give southern Africa a visit. Whether you're looking for a weekend getaway or the trip of a lifetime, our region has something for every traveller.

We at RETOSA wish you all an enjoyable festive season and a productive new year!
