Jacarandas in full bloom in Pretoria and Harare

From the end of September until the middle of November, the jacaranda trees flower in all their glory and turn the cities of Pretoria and Harare into purple paradise. There are almost 70 000 jacarandas lining many of the streets, parks and suburbs of Pretoria. The jacaranda story began in 1888, when JD Celliers imported two jacaranda trees from Rio de Janeiro. He planted them in the front garden of his home, Myrtle Lodge, in Sunnyside. This property is now part of Sunnyside Primary School at 146 Celliers Street. These trees are still standing and bear a bronze plaque and can be viewed during school hours.
